Reducing rumen starch fermentation of wheat with 3% NaOH does not reduce whole tract starch digestibility and increases energy utilization in wethers during heat stress

چکیده
Previous studies have suggested that feeding slowly fermentable grains might improve heat-tolerance in ruminants, due to increased post-rumen starch digestion and a reduction the heat increment of feeding. During stress gastrointestinal function may be compromised which could impact on site extent digestion. To characterize vitro rumen DM disappearance corn, wheat, 3% NaOH-treated wheat grains, grain samples were incubated during 0, 5, 8, 24 h at 39 °C buffered fluid. Then faecal pH whole tract apparent starch, DM, organic matter (OM) digestibility determined wethers fed, with either corn (CD), (WD) or NaOH- treated (TWD) based diets two experiments. In experiment 1, 22 fed CD WD (n = 11 per diet) three different stages climate controlled rooms: stage 1 (TNFR), 7 days thermoneutral conditions 18–21 40–50% relative humidity) 1.3 times maintenance feed intake; 2 (HSFR), (28–38 30–50% intake as TNFR; 3 (HSFU), HSFR 1.5 intake. 2, 31 10), 10) TWD 11) same temperature humidity regimes however TNFR received 1.7 while HSFU After incubation, untreated had fastest rate followed by (P < 0.001). Wethers lower 0.001) higher OM than those WD, was associated content diets. NaOH treatment did not affect being like WD. At low intakes (1.3 maintenance) there no effect whereas reduced OM, digestibility. However, similar metabolizable energy intake, higher. It is concluded reduce (in condition) without reducing (tested vivo) heat-stressed wethers. The study demonstrated can strategy increase retention under stress.

Rumen digestibility of starch and nitrogen in near-isogenic lines of wheat
Comparisons between cereal species have shown that wheat starch is fermented more rapidly in the rumen than starch from maize, barley, potato or sorghum, probably due to the protein matrix surrounding the starch granules, but there are few comparisons of starch digestion from different cultivars of wheat. Although wheat varieties are classi®ed as being hard or soft, genetic factors affecting nu...
متن کاملEffect of thermal processing and storage on digestibility of starch in whole wheat grains
Gelatinisation and retrogradation of starch in wheat flour systems and whole wheat grains were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the impact of these events on starch digestibility was investigated. Retrogradation of starch was studied with partially and fully cooked (boiled at 100°C for 12 min and 32 min, respectively) wheat grains that were subjected to storage at 22°C ...
متن کاملStarch digestibility of rolled or sodium-hydroxide treated rye grain in dairy cows
It was hypothesised that compared to rolled rye grain, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treatment of whole rye grain would reduce the starch digestibility in the rumen whereas the small intestinal starch digestibility would be unaffected. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether rolled and NaOH treated rye grain has digestive patterns similar to rolled and NaOH treated wheat in lactating ...
متن کاملAssessment of the mobile bag method for estimation of in vivo starch digestibility.
The objective was to assess the ability of the in situ mobile nylon bag method for predicting small intestinal and total tract starch digestibility. Starch disappearance was measured for 18 samples of different cereals and legumes subjected to different physical and chemical processing methods and compared with coherent in vivo digestibility. Starch disappearance was measured both with and with...
متن کاملCorn Grain Processing and Digestion
Grains are fed to livestock primarily to supply energy, and the major energy source in cereal grains is starch. For maximum starch digestion, corn and sorghum grain must be processed. For non-ruminants, starch from finely ground grain is fully digested, but for ruminants fed concentrate diets, finely ground grain can cause metabolic diseases. Hence, steam rolling or flaking and fermentation (hi...
